Family Legacies

Beyond traditional family trees, beyond the family photo album lie the memories that we hold most precious. The memories that tug at our heartstrings and haunt us in quiet moments. It could be a person, a place, or just a moment that calls us to remember. This class is about creating a space for those memories to breathe. We will not be covering large diagraming of generations of family members. Rather, we will concentrate on story telling and evoking childhood memories and incorporating them into our work. More than a genealogy chart, a family tree tells a story. It helps us to learn about our past, and look forward to our future. In this class we will focus on alternative family trees, incorporating pictures, lettering, mementos and other items to try and capture the feeling of what it means to be a family. They will be as unique as the person creating them.

Time will be spent in paper preparation, discussion of styles of trees and backgrounds. Through writing exercises, layering of images, vining techniques, adding design elements, transfering images and using color we will tell a story.
Each participant will layout and design their project in a way to highlight the people and memories that are important to them.
