Saint Andrew, first apostle of the twelve, was originally a follower of St. John the Baptist. After hearing St. John proclaim “Ecce Agnus Dei.” St. Andrew left St. John and began to follow Jesus. Here in this miniature, St. Andrew has stepped out of the Old Testament background and is standing in the New Testament foreground with the Jordan flowing behind him. Saint Andrew is also the apostle who connects others to Christ . It was St. Andrew who introduced Jesus to his brother Peter, thus St. Andrew is holding the “ keys to the kingdom” that Jesus gave to Peter, the first head of the church. Andrew is also the one who introduced to Jesus, the young boy with the two fish and five barley loaves at the miracle of the feeding of the multitude; and here Andrew is also holding the basket containing two, glistening, gilded fish and five barley loaves.

| Andrew is also holding the “ X” shaped cross he was said to have been crucified upon. Rather than being nailed, he was tied to it and continued to introduce many people to Jesus through his preaching from the cross. As the crowds demanded that he be taken down, Andrew refused to be taken off the cross and died on the third day. His feast day is November 30th. Andrew is wearing the red robe of martyrdom, and above him is a diapered sky; again, red symbolizing his martyrdom, gold, his entry into the everlasting kingdom of heaven, and, blue with small white X's referencing his cross and the flag of Scotland of which he is the patron saint . |
