Edmund, formally a renowned geometry teacher, was fascinated by the beauty and truth of geometry. However, it did not fulfi ll the truth his being was looking for. One night , his deceased mother appeared to him, and, with her finger, drew three interloc ing circles - the ancient symbol of the Tr init y. She told Edmund to "learn these figures”, (Has figuras addisce) So, having lef t behind a renowned teaching career at Oxford University, Edmund now stands in bishops garb, holding out the book of divine science of theology, which features the three interlocking circles of the Trinity along with the Latin inscription, so as to instruct many others along the way to “ learn these figures”. His old blackboard is beneath his feat and his compass is falling out of the scene. The blackboard shows the last remnants of his interest in the human
science of geometry, which are the three circles inverted, which display the “geometry of color”.

| As one who is “ learned” in the divine science of theology, he is illuminated in gold vestments so as to shine as the brightness of the firmament. He is depicted with the “gray hairs of wisdom” and a youthful face. Beside him are three sunflowers. Sunflowers are a Christian symbol for followers of Christ . Just as a sunflower strains to follow the sun in the sky, so the follower of Christ strains to follow the son of god. Edmund’s chosen path is sprinkled with sharp stones, alluding to the difficult times in which he lived due to king and country. Eventually his path leads him to the Abby of Pontigny behind him, where to this day, his body awaits a glorious resurrection. Over Pontigny, the firmament breaks out into a sparkling array of geometric patterns, referencing the saint who gave up all so as to “instruct many to justice”, and therefore shall “shine like the stars for all eternity”. |
