In this Illumination, the main scene depicts St. John the Baptist as the prophetic bridge between the Old Testament and the New Testament. Jesus related John the Baptist directly to the prophesies about the return of Elisha and declared John as the greatest of all the prophets so as to place him in line with the Old Testament prophets. Like Elisha, John appears suddenly on the scene, calls for repentance on the part of Israel, leads a solitary life and has an uncompromising message. Here, John stands on the bank of the river, and like a bridge, he reaches out across the waters of the Jordan as penitents from the Old Testament era pass under him one by one and come out on the other side so as to arrive in the New Covenant, spiritually prepared for the Messiah. Looking under the arm of this prophetic “bridge” one can already see the Messiah, Jesus, standing in the distance who, in all

humility has cast Himself with the human lot as he waits in line with everyone else to be baptized. John is depicted as wearing camel’s hair clothing. During his stay in the wilderness, he lived off of locusts and wild honey which form a border surrounding the main scene. Bees, because they live solely for the good of the hive, represent John’s singled-minded loyalty to the Kingdom, and in the main scene he is shown holding onto a branch with a bee hive to balance himself as he reaches out over the water. Violets, which are a Christian symbol of humility reference not only the humility of Jesus but also of John who, with such a huge following of his own said of Jesus; “He must increase, but I must decrease.” The Lady Bugs reference Herodias and Salome who demanded from Herod, the head of John the Baptist , served on a platter. The Feast of St. John the Baptist, Precursor is June 24th.
