Right Scene: After his work on Earth is complete, Joseph is born into the day of eternity.

This scene depicts the death of Joseph.  The sacredness of daily work in the bright, gilded, sun-drenched workshop gives way to evening when work is done. The dimly lit room symbolically sparkles and glistens from the grace of a happy death, which can only come from a lifetime of love and sacrifice that accompanies
the response to God’s call.

Joseph dies in the arms of Jesus, the Son of God.  At the closing of his eyes, three lilies bloom on his staff.  His work is complete.

Jesus, while giving Joseph one last kiss, glances over Joseph’s head to see the toy, which they crafted together so many years ago, resting on the table.  It was just one of the many small tokens of love that Joseph offered Him along the way. And with that, a tear glistens on His cheek.

Left Scene:  The Word Desired to Be Born into the Days of Time

This scene depicts the workshop of Joseph, the carpenter.  It is gilded in gold as it is a place that resonates with the sacredness of work. Joseph submits to God’s will and answers God’s call by accepting and loving Jesus, as if He were his own son.  He teaches and trains Him in the faith, as well as a trade.

Here is where Jesus, the “Word”, is at work in the world.  He humbly submits Himself to the carpenter from Nazareth.  The child Jesus will one day be come Jesus, the high priest and king.  This is symbolized by the ancient headpiece that Jesus is wearing.

Together the two craft a toy, a spinning top, by using the basic tools and techniques of the carpenter.  The string is pulled and the top gyrates on the surface of the tiny workbench that Joseph has lovingly fashioned for Jesus.

As the top spins, it moves toward the back edge of the workbench and kicks left over wood shavings from its surface.  This clears an area to project the ominous foreshadowing of the events to come.  The three nails and the hammer allude to the future events and the kind of sacrifice that the high priest will offer up for the world.

One of the many silent sufferings of Joseph can be seen in the form of a tear that glistens on his cheek.

The two scenes are surrounded by a gilded border that includes carpentry tools: hammers, scribes, squares and planers.  Lilies and violets are also sprinkled throughout the border.  Lilies are a symbol of purity and violets a symbol of humility. In the bottom center, the Pontifical College Josephinum rises up
between the two scenes.  It is flanked on both sides by lilies that flourish from the carpenter’s plane.  Like Joseph of Nazareth, the Pontifical College Josephinum has responded to God’s call in the past to prepare those who are responding to God’s call to the priesthood.  From generation to generation, the building of these spiritual bridges has helped the people of God cross from the time of days into the day of eternity.  To rest in the arms of Jesus, the Son of God, when evening comes and work is done.
