Under the luminous, gilded, wings of St. Michael the Archangel, the night becomes bright as day, as he defends and protects the Church. In this scene from Revelation, Michael, raises his sword on high against the red dragon who forms a border surrounding the nocturnal scene. The dragon according to Revelation, is in pursuit of the “woman and her child” symbolized by the Church and Christ’s Eucharist presence dwelling within Her. Just as the dragon “spews water from it’s mouth, streaming like a river...”, in order to sweep the Woman and Her child away, Michael places his shield between the Church and the approaching waves, symbolizing how he not only protects the Church against “spiritual darkness”, but also from menacing natural elements as well. The feast of St . Michael the Archangel is September 29th.
